5 speed shifter knob won't fit chromed shifter threads

Shifter knob was satisfactory, but I broke the threads off of the CPC shift lever trying to strip the chrome off of the threads with a threaded nut.
Very dissapointing, as I will now need to buy a new shift lever and knob.
I plan to go with a Lokar lever.
